Substantive Consultants x 2 posts in Geriatrics and General Medicine

Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust

Department of Ageing and Health

Substantive Consultants x 2 posts in Geriatrics and General Medicine

Full-Time – 40 hours per week + on-call rota supplement

Proposed start date: From November 2020 negotiable

Guy’s and St. Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust (GSTFT) is made up of two of London’s best known teaching hospitals and employs over 13,650 staff and has over 2 million patient contacts a year. Our annual turnover is now £1.3 billion.

The Department of Ageing and Health at GSTFT is seeking to recruit 2 new consultants to join our dynamic, enthusiastic and forward thinking team of highly motivated and dedicated geriatricians. Over recent years, the team at GSTFT has developed novel care pathways for older adults in the community, within the Emergency Floor and for patients on geriatric, medical and surgical wards at GSTFT. The advertised posts will support the delivery of these services and offer exciting opportunities to further lead, develop and deliver a seamless service across hospital and community settings, integrating with primary care and social services.

These posts have the opportunity to incorporate working in our front door service for frail older adults on the emergency floor, on a specialist ward based in the Older Persons’ Unit, in the POPS service (in- and out-patient) and in community (bed based and domiciliary, hospital at home services and care home support). The department employs a flexible approach to job planning, with successful candidates able to develop a role based on clinical service needs and personal specialist interests, following local negotiation.

All the post holders will either contribute to the elderly medicine on call rota which includes on site weekend working in our Acute Older Persons Unit on the Emergency floor, or to the Acute General Medicine rota which includes on-site weekend and evening working.

Although it is desirable that candidates have received higher level subspecialty training in the areas they would be working, a lack of such training should not deter candidates. Enthusiasm and a track record in innovative service delivery and evaluation through quality improvement methodology is desirable but in-house support will be available to further develop these skills. All candidates will have the opportunity to be involved in or have formal roles leading education and training for undergraduates and postgraduates and in research programmes.

You must be fully registered with the GMC and hold Licence to Practice and be on the Specialist Register, or within six months of attaining your CCT in General Internal Medicine and Geriatric Medicine or equivalent at interview stage.

The post-holders will have regular contact with vulnerable adults and/or children (0-18 years) and therefore this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
