Locum Consultant in Gastroenterology with Interest in Artificial Nutrition

The Department of Gastroenterology is seeking a new full-time (10 PA) locum consultant gastroenterologist with interest in artificial nutrition and intestinal failure who will help us meet the challenges of our expanding clinical, academic and training portfolio.

The department offers a wide range of services to patients with gastrointestinal and liver disorders, including endoscopic ultrasound, tertiary interventional endoscopy, pancreatico-biliary procedures, oesophageal pathophysiology, enteral/parenteral nutrition, inflammatory bowel disease, hepatology services. The current nutrition consultant is supported by a team of 2 nutrition nurse specialists, 2 dietitians and a specialist pharmacist.

The main purpose of this post is to support the nutrition team in providing high and consistent quality care to the increasing number of patients bowel disease in need of enteral or parenteral nutrition referred to our department by primary or secondary care providers, or to patients admitted through the emergency department. The main task for the post holder will be to offer improved outcomes, better cost effectiveness and shorter hospital stays, even via the implementation of novel models of inpatient care. He/She will have the additional task to improve the liaison with the emergency department aimed at admission avoidance and/or quick transfer under specialist care.

The post holder is also expected to contribute to the delivery of an effective outpatient service, particularly focused on innovative follow up strategies, on supporting the prevention of unnecessary admissions and promoting safe and timely discharge. He/She will participate in endoscopy service and training and contribute to the recruitment to trials and research.

Applicants should have a CSST in Gastroenterology or be within 6 months of achieving it, and ideally subspecialty training or documented experience in nutrition. A research background would be welcomed as the department has an interest in developing the academic side. Experience in an intestinal failure unit would be an advantage.
