Consultant Rheumatologist

Based at Royal Gwent Hospital, SE Wales

Full Time (10 Sessions)

Anticipated Start Date: ASAP

Closing Date for Applications: 21st October 2020

This is a substantive Consultant position. The appointee will assist in providing a clinical service in Rheumatology to the population of the Gwent area. The job plan includes a weekly academic session at the University Hospital of Wales. The post holder will be fully involved in education, research and development and clinical audit programmes and will be expected to play a major part in the academic development of the Rheumatology Service in South East Wales. A specialist interest that complements existing areas of specialisation in Gwent (metabolic bone disease, early inflammatory arthritis, connective tissue disease) and at the University Hospital of Wales would be encouraged.

The Gwent Rheumatology Service endeavors to provide an equitable, Gwent-wide service for all patients. The primary base of this post is the Royal Gwent Hospital which provides an inpatient, day case and outpatient service alongside emergency admissions. Outpatient services are additionally provided at the Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr, Nevill Hall and St Woolos Hospitals.

A key feature of this service is the broad range of expertise in rheumatic disease that is available through our link with the University Hospital of Wales which provides a tertiary referral centre encompassing expertise in paediatric rheumatology. All posts are strongly supported by clinical specialists in physiotherapy and occupational therapy in both North and South Gwent.

Nevill Hall Hospital houses a six-bed Rheumatology day unit providing biologics infusion services.

The current Gwent Consultants are all strongly committed to the weekly South Wales, Cardiff-based academic programme and are also involved in a working party looking at the creation of a Wales Arthritis Rheumatology network. All existing Consultants are involved in teaching Medical Students from the University of Wales College of Medicine (UWCM) during the musculoskeletal block of their training in Gwent. Regular multidisciplinary meetings on a two monthly basis have also been established.

The non-consultant staff at Nevill Hall Hospital comprises one training registrar and a FP1 & ST1 (shared with Haematology). There are also seven clinical nurse specialists and two rheumatology support nurses providing specialist services, infusions and a telephone helpline service in the Gwent area.

The Health Board actively supports consultant doctors to undertake funded 3 month formal sabbaticals through an annual application process.

Free parking is available across all Aneurin Bevan University Health Board Sites.
