Consultant Physician in Care of the Elderly

Consultant Physician in Care of the Elderly

The Post

We want to appoint new consultant colleagues to join our expanding Care of the Elderly service at Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (GHNHSFT). The base for this post is Gloucestershire Royal Hospital, though our team provides in-patient and out-patient Elderly services at both Gloucestershire Royal Hospital and Cheltenham General Hospital; we also provide clinics and Geriatrician led in-reach services to seven of Gloucestershire’s Community hospitals.

We are one of the largest Foundation Trusts in England with a sufficiently large and diverse workforce of healthcare professionals to encourage sub-specialisation interests. These include: falls, orthogeriatrics, surgical liaison, movement disorders, community geriatrics, dementia and the flexibility to embrace new and as yet undeveloped areas of interest. Therefore individual job plans represent different jigsaw pieces that make up the complete picture of our service. There are many flexible opportunities for our consultants’ development through our annual job planning process.

We are currently offering, a generous relocation expenses package, £2k welcome payment on appointment, £3k further instalment paid after 3 year service, subject to performance.

We encourage applications from ST7s and established consultants are equally. We also welcome applications from candidates wishing to work part time.

The Department and Specialist role

Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is one of the largest providers of secondary care services in the UK. We provide a full range of acute, subacute and chronic disease management services. We are closely integrated with our colleagues in Gloucestershire Health and Care NHS Foundation Trust and primary care.  For instance, we collaborated in developing our Community COTE Consultant Physician posts which divide clinical time between the Frailty Assessment Service and a community locality. Our Commissioners, the NHS Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group strongly support the delivery of our services.

GHNHSFT provides cross boundary supra-secondary care services in specialties including interventional cardiology, vascular surgery and oncology (and its partner specialties). Thus the breadth, complexity and comprehensive reach of our diagnostic services reflect the breadth, complexity and comprehensive reach of our county’s NHS services.

This appointment is a further piece in the growing jigsaw that is our expanding Care of the Elderly service, through collaboration with our sister Gloucestershire NHS Trusts and our rich history of comprehensive community services that embraces our community hospitals. We have recently appointed three new consultants to join the team. We have a new vacancy due to a retirement.

Core to this post is the early Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment of the frail elderly presenting as emergencies to Gloucestershire Royal Hospital, the development and support of the Frailty Assessment Service and our Frailty Unit, and to increase the provision of general elderly care medicine within our trust and county.

The outline duties of the post advertised are detailed in the job plan appended. These include attending the fixed weekend Care of the Elderly post take ward round and Frailty Assessment Service (FAS) sessions at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital on a 1 in 6 basis (but no on-call). This frequency will fall as we continue expanding our consultant workforce.
